Week 6 Day 2 – a/A Times

Mar 1, 2017 | Posted by Bao Le | Coding |

I know I said I was only going to focus on the assessment yesterday, and absolutely forego the day’s project, but after a 1-on-1 with my TA, he convinced me that I should definitely work on the project a little bit given, lest I pay for it later during the full-stack project we’ll be working on. He really went out of his way to assure me that I’d do well on the assessment tomorrow, especially given that I aced the practice assessment, and still had about two days to study.

I did end up putting some time into the project, and absolutely enjoyed it. I’m really finding that I’m loving front-end development, especially given my history with artsy stuff. I used to draw with pencil and paper a lot. I’ve painted a couple times, mostly for my girlfriend’s presents, and I also used to tag a lot, more commonly known as graffiti, but on paper of course. So I’m definitely into the design aspect, and making a website look awesome. That used to be the kind of stuff I was into when it came to being on forums. Designing banners, and icons, and stuff that made my profile unique. And because of all this, and how hyped up React is, I’m REALLY looking forward to this Friday where we start React.

For Tuesday’s project, we made a clone of the New York Times’ website, except added some tweaks to customize it into “App Academy” Times. It was a really fun concept. There was definitely some guidance involved, but after about 3 sections, they gave you blank html and css files, and you were supposed to replicate a mock up as best you can with the skills you’ve acquired through practicing CSS in the previous sections. I absolutely love the level of guidance they gave in the first three sections, slowly letting go of your hand before they really set you off on your own to finish up. I really wish I had more time to actually complete the project, and that I wasn’t so worried about the assessment.

Anyways, today we’ll be starting AJAX material, which is really interesting. I’ll go into that more tomorrow. But until then, take care!
